Komatsu Expands Underground Hard Rock Lineup With New ZJ32 Face Drill and ZB31 Bolter

Komatsu has strengthened its underground hard rock mining portfolio with the launch of two new medium-size machines—the ZJ32 face drill and ZB31 bolter—introduced as part of the new Z3 series at MINExpo in Las Vegas.

Designed to deliver versatility, productivity, and streamlined maintenance, the Z3 series features a universal platform that emphasizes modular design. This approach helps reduce service costs, extend equipment life, and improve overall operational efficiency. With standardized operator controls, training becomes quicker and more intuitive for teams working across multiple machine types.

The latest additions broaden Komatsu’s offerings within the medium-size class of development drills and bolters, supporting operations that require flexible yet robust equipment for hard rock environments.

Technology-Driven Features for Faster, Safer Drilling and Bolting

A standout enhancement in the new series is an advanced ground support installation system co-developed with Jennmar, using the J-LOK P pumpable resin. This innovation enables faster, more consistent bolting cycles and improved support installation.

The drilling attachments on the ZJ32 and ZB31 have been engineered with minimal mechanical complexity, resulting in smoother operation, reduced cycle times, and significantly increased drifter uptime compared to similar units in this class.

Pathway Toward Battery and Autonomous Solutions

Komatsu plans to further expand the Z3 line with upcoming battery-powered and intelligent machine control models. These future additions aim to give customers a full suite of options—from diesel to battery and semi-autonomous systems—supporting a gradual transition toward next-generation, fully automated underground mining operations.
