FLSmidth to supply equipment for Saudi Arabian phosphate mine

FLSmidth has been selected to offer critical technologies and services for Maadens phosphate 3 phase 1 mining site in Saudi Arabias Northern Province

The company has had a long-standing collaboration with Ma’aden. The new order is worth around US$78mn (DKK 530mn) and was placed in the third quarter of 2023. The equipment should be fully integrated by 2025.

FLSmidth has collaborated with Ma’aden since the commencement of the new phosphate mine operations in 2019, beginning with early laboratory testing of ore body samples in 2019 and continuing through the creation of the flowsheet and pilot scale testing. The collaboration’s focus has always been on protecting the integrity of the flowsheet while also ensuring that the technology is adequately integrated into the overall plant design to offer the highest potential performance from the process plant operations.

FLSmidth will supply all of the essential equipment connected with the phosphate beneficiation plant, as well as technical support services during the design, building, commissioning, and ramp-up stages, under this new deal. Primary and secondary sizers, apron and HAB feeders, cone crushers, screens, cyclone clusters, ball mills, paste and high-rate thickeners, horizontal belt filter, slurry pumps, knife-gate valves, and flotation columns are all part of the order.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Ma’aden on this expansion, as this order sets another strong standard for our MissionZero agenda. In particular the incorporation of our paste thickening and dewatering technology at this important mine site plays a key role in reducing emissions and water spend from the beneficiation process,” comments Mikko Keto, CEO FLSmidth.

Just prior to the recent Electric Mine 2024 conference in Perth, Western Australia, we caught up with Arnaldo Bertazzi, VP Industry Network Leader – Industries, at Hitachi Energy. He says that the key to electrification in mining is to start small and think big. Electricity will be the backbone of the entire mine energy system, and digitalisation is one of the fundamental technology areas this is enabling the energy transition in mining.
