Datamaran Launches AI-Powered Applicability Assessment to Show Companies Which Regulations Apply to Them

Datamaran has announced the general availability of its Applicability Assessment feature, an addition to its Regulatory Monitoring platform designed to help organisations identify which regulations apply to their operations across multiple jurisdictions.

Determining regulatory applicability can be a complex and time-consuming process for multinational organisations, particularly those managing numerous legal entities across different countries, industries and business units. Traditional approaches often require compliance, legal and sustainability teams to manually review regulatory requirements and assess their relevance to each entity.

Datamaran’s new feature aims to simplify this process through continuous, AI-assisted assessments supported by expert validation. The tool enables organisations to assess multiple entities against active and proposed mandatory regulations with a single action, classifying each entity-regulation pairing as “Likely”, “Unlikely” or “Uncertain” to apply.

Each assessment includes an explanation of the criteria behind the determination, helping organisations understand the reasoning and identify additional information required to resolve uncertain outcomes.

According to Marjella Lecourt-Alma, CEO and co-founder of Datamaran, legal, compliance and sustainability teams need a clear understanding of their regulatory obligations. The new feature is designed to provide this information at entity level, helping organisations manage regulatory complexity more efficiently.

The platform includes several capabilities to support the assessment process. Entity profiles can be automatically populated with information such as headquarters, operating countries, industry sector, revenue and employee numbers. Organisations can also group entities according to regions, business units, supplier tiers or other internal structures.

Users can initiate assessments across entire entity groups through saved views, curated searches or regulatory notifications. Results are presented through dashboards that show regulatory exposure across entities, while an audit trail records changes over time.

The system also identifies missing data that may prevent a definitive applicability determination, allowing teams to address information gaps more effectively. A subject-matter expert review capability, planned for a future release, is intended to enable specialists to validate assessments and document their reasoning.

Feedback from organisations involved in pilot testing highlighted the transparency of the assessment logic and the platform’s ease of use. Pilot participants from global industrial and food manufacturing companies also noted the value of identifying missing information and reviewing multiple entities through a central dashboard.

Datamaran monitors mandatory regulations and voluntary initiatives across more than 99 non-financial topics and over 190 countries. By including proposed regulations in its monitoring process, the platform aims to help organisations anticipate potential obligations before they take effect.

The company also reported that, in one client study, regulatory research that previously required approximately 28 hours of manual work was completed in five minutes using Datamaran.

The launch reflects growing demand for technology that helps businesses manage expanding regulatory requirements while improving efficiency, transparency and accountability. For organisations operating across multiple markets, automated applicability assessments could support more consistent compliance planning and help teams focus their resources on the requirements most relevant to their operations.
