BHP to partner with XCMG for mining fleet solutions

BHP has formalised a global agreement framework with XCMG to collaborate on the planning and deployment of mining equipment that aligns with BHP’s safety, technical, and sustainability standards. The partnership aims to foster joint engineering efforts, localise support services, and ensure both parties are aligned on the integration and readiness of emerging technologies.

While the agreement does not stipulate specific market shares, it establishes a platform for continuous innovation, particularly in fleet development, components, and potential end-to-end mining solutions at BHP operations. This collaboration highlights BHP’s commitment to strengthening supply chain resilience, advancing operational technology, and engaging strategically with equipment manufacturers in key markets.

The initiative also supports BHP’s goal to diversify its supplier base by working with competitive original equipment manufacturers capable of delivering solutions that meet its evolving requirements around fleet efficiency, automation, and decarbonisation.

“This partnership with XCMG reflects BHP’s approach to working closely with strategic suppliers to shape the future of mining technology,” said Rashpal Bhatti, Group Procurement Officer at BHP. “By combining our operational insight with XCMG’s innovation capability, we are supporting the development of safer, more sustainable fleet solutions. It is a strong step towards reducing emissions across our operations.”

The collaboration with XCMG forms a key pillar of BHP’s Emerging Markets strategy, which is designed to enhance cost efficiency and supply resilience by engaging non-traditional suppliers. It is also aligned with BHP’s broader push to create future-ready equipment supply models that support digitalisation, decarbonisation, and long-term operational sustainability.

This move follows another recent development in BHP’s supplier strategy, with Metso signing a three-year agreement to provide metallic liners for chute solutions at BHP’s Western Australia iron ore operations.
