Mobile Overhead Fall Protection: Bringing the Anchor Point to the Job

BTS’s AirHook range is designed to address that challenge. These mobile overhead fall-arrest anchor systems can be moved to the work location, offering an alternative where fixed infrastructure is unavailable, impractical or uneconomical.

Four AirHook models for different applications

The AirHook MAX PRO Trailer has a height-adjustable mast ranging from 6.1 m to 15 m and two independent 360-degree rotating anchor arms with built-in overload/fall indicators. Its four-stage telescopic mast is operated through an electric/hydraulic system with pendant control. The trailer includes electric-hydraulic braking, a breakaway emergency system and solar-panel battery charging, with 50 mm ball or pintle-ring towing options. BTS identifies heavy-equipment and aviation maintenance, large construction projects, shutdowns and turnarounds, and remote-area maintenance or inspections as potential applications.

AirHook Trailer

The AirHook Trailer provides two fixed anchor points at a height of 7 m. Its electric/hydraulic mast is operated by pendant control, and the unit includes electric trailer brakes, a battery-operated breakaway system and a 50 mm ball towing arrangement. Forklift pockets support loading for long-haul transport. BTS identifies transport and logistics facilities, fleet maintenance depots, rail yards, construction contractors and industrial maintenance providers as potential applications. A system set-up with a winch rescue/recovery arrangement or a height-rescue arrangement for work at height or in confined spaces can be configured from the trailer chassis, subject to the required application.

AirHook MAX PRO

The AirHook MAX PRO has a height-adjustable mast reaching up to 14 m and two independent 360-degree rotating anchor arms with built-in overload/fall indicators. Its electric/hydraulic, wire-rope mast system is operated by a push-button control, and the unit includes hose-burst protection, a manual lowering override, an isolation switch, a warning beacon and an emergency stop. With a 2 m × 2 m base footprint, it is designed for sites where floor space is limited. Forklift pockets and lifting points support handling and long-haul transport. Potential applications include mining workshops, heavy-vehicle maintenance facilities, warehousing and distribution centres, shipping-container operations and mobile-plant servicing.

AirHook Lite

AirHook Lite is a compact, single-person system with one anchor point and an adjustable anchor height of 4.9 m to 7.4 m. Its two-part counterweighted design features a winch-raised, lockable mast that rotates through 360 degrees. Separable counterweights allow smaller forklifts to move the unit in sections, while its pallet-sized footprint and forklift/pallet-jack pockets support handling in tighter spaces. A visual overload/fall indicator is included. BTS lists SRL or self-rescue-unit use and offers a recovery configuration for confined-space rescue; a dual-unit and B-Rail assembly with two independent anchor points is also an option. Potential applications include service technicians, transport operators, utilities maintenance, smaller industrial operations, remote work locations and maintenance facilities.

Designed for changing work conditions

BTS highlights mobility as a central advantage of the range. Moving a system between work areas may help reduce travel between fixed anchor points, support changing maintenance schedules and make it easier to respond to tasks in remote locations. Actual benefits depend on the job, the site and the selected configuration.

The four configurations differ in anchor height, operating system, handling arrangements and available rescue/recovery options. Model selection should consider the task, approved user numbers, anchor height and reach, handling and transport, available floor space, ground conditions, rescue arrangements and the maximum arrest force rating permitted for the self-retracting lifeline (SRL). Correct selection, training, inspection and a suitable rescue plan remain essential.

An excavator maintenance example

BTS describes a scenario in which technicians needed to inspect and service excavators across multiple workshop areas. Installing permanent overhead anchorage throughout the facility could be costly and would not necessarily cover every work position. In the example, an AirHook system was positioned beside the maintenance task, bringing overhead anchorage to the work.

BTS says this improved access to overhead fall protection, reduced set-up time and increased operational flexibility. The example shows how mobile anchorage may help when the equipment and work location change.

Engineering and testing

BTS says it designs, tests and manufactures its products in Australia, drawing on capabilities that include product engineering, prototype development, physical load testing and performance verification. The company reports operating a NATA-accredited Testing & Research Laboratory and a NATA-accredited Type C Inspection Body, and holds BSI ISO 9001 certification.

BTS lists the following standards for its AirHook range: AirHook MAX PRO and AirHook MAX PRO Trailer — AS 5532, ANSI Z359.18, EN 795 and CEN/TS 16415; AirHook Trailer — AS 5532, EN 795 and CEN/TS 16415; and AirHook Lite — ANSI Z359.18, CSA Z259.15, AS 5532, OSHA 1910.140 and OSHA 1926.502.

For operators reviewing work-at-height arrangements around mining equipment, heavy vehicles, rail assets, containers or other industrial plant, the AirHook range offers a mobile approach to overhead anchorage. Contact BTS to discuss the application and identify the configuration suited to the task.
