Peru’s Antamina Copper Mine Begins Phased Restart Following Fatal Accident

LIMA – Antamina, one of Peru’s largest copper mines, has begun a gradual restart of operations after a fatal accident earlier this week halted activity at the site.

The mine, located in the Ancash region and jointly owned by Glencore, BHP, Teck Resources, and Mitsubishi, suspended operations on Tuesday following an incident at the Yanacancha camp. The accident claimed the life of an operations manager and left another senior employee injured, according to a source close to the company.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. While the company has not released full details, it stated that ensuring safety and operational integrity is its highest priority as work resumes in phases.

Antamina plays a critical role in Peru’s mining sector and global copper supply, making its safe return to production closely watched by both industry stakeholders and local authorities.
