Authorities are examining a blast believed to have targeted a mine train.
Investigators are trying to determine how a heavy vehicle became bombed near Glencore’s Cerrejon coal operation.
The locomotive was making an overnight journey through Uribia when part of it exploded on 15 December 2023.
“An attack with explosives was perpetrated against our railway infrastructure at kilometre 122,” a company spokesperson said in a public statement.
The proponent condemned the violence for endangering worker lives, and hopes to confirm exactly who was responsible.
“Cerrejon rejects these types of violent acts that put at risk the safety of our work team, neighbouring communities and the normal functioning of our operation. We are working to enable transportation to Puerto Bolivar as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.
“Cerrejon is supporting authorities who are currently working to investigate the incident and take steps to identify those responsible.”
The incident damaged the railway line and a train carriage. No fatalities or injuries were reported at the time of publication.
