A resources operation continues to experience anxiety and discontent after employee fatalities.
Production has not been the same since two workers died and one contractor was seriously injured at South32’s Mozal smelter, 23km west of downtown Maputo.
Although the contractor survived after receiving emergency medical treatment, colleagues and loved ones still grieve the tragic fatalities of Cristovão Alberto Tonela and Alfredo Francisco Domingos João in Potroom A on 7 November 2022.
“Our deepest sympathies remain with their families and colleagues to whom we have provided support and counselling,” the employer said in its fiscal 2023 financial report.
The company has since worked with the original equipment manufacturer to introduce exclusion zones, controlled areas, and replace critical components in all girders.
“Our investment in safety leadership includes our ‘Lead Safely Every Day’ program which supports our leaders to engage their teams on our ‘safety guarantee’, creating a sense of chronic unease to enhance our safety culture. Lead Safely Every Day commenced in FY23 and will continue in FY24,” the report said.
The proponent reported a $173 million loss after tax compared to a $2.7 billion profit after tax during fiscal 2022.
